Often these events honor military service in some way and having active duty members and veterans attend is a special occasion for many Americans. In fact, every Fourth of July, Veterans Day, and Memorial Day parade you will encounter many proud former military members wearing their uniforms. You may also see retirees and veterans wearing the uniform at retirement ceremonies of military members, funerals, and weddings of close family members. There are specific guidelines for when military retirees and veterans can wear their uniforms. Heres a look at when they can and cant wear their uniforms. Military Retiree and Veteran Differences The rules state that retirees can wear their uniforms. To be considered a retired veteran, one must have served 20 years or more. However, there are medically retired service members who were injured in the line of duty who also rate the uniform as a retired military member once a civilian. ? Veterans are members who served but did not accumulate 20 years of service, however, they may also wear the uniform but only in special occasions that are typically centered around military service and family events (military wedding / funeral, etc). Uniform Rules for Veterans and Retirees The rules for wearing military uniforms as a retired military member or a discharged veteran are similar for all the services. There are certain rules for those seeking to wear the uniform for formal functions, national holidays, parades, military funerals and weddings and other military occasions. Only the Service Dress Uniform may be worn; no work, battle dress or PT uniforms are permitted to be worn at formal events. For non-formal events, veterans are allowed to wear other working uniforms as deemed appropriate for the occasion. Grooming standards are obviously not enforced when a veteran wears any of the uniforms, but it is common courtesy to wear the uniform as if you were still in the military conforming to all the hair, facial hair, finger nail, and other grooming standards of the military branch you represent. All veterans and retired members will conform with the same standards of appearance, military customs, practices, and conduct in uniform prescribed for active-duty. Prohibited Places and Events for Military Uniforms There are some places and events where the uniform is prohibited to be worn by discharged and retired members of the military. These include: At any meeting or demonstration which is anti-government in nature.During political activities, private employment or commercial interests, when an inference of official sponsorship for the activity could be drawn.When appearing in civil or criminal court Uniform Rules for Each Branch of Service Retired military members and honorably discharged veterans may wear the rank and insignia currently in use, or the rank and insignia in use at the time of their discharge/retirement, but cannot combine the two. The duration of a copyright is determined by when a work was created, whether it was published, and whether the author died. Additionally, if an author has died, but the date of death is not known, different laws apply. Generally, works published after 1992 but before 1978 are considered copyright protected for 95 years from the date the work was first published. Also, an unpublished work that was created before 1978 is still protected under copyright laws for the life of the author plus an additional 70 years after the authors death. Different facets of copyright laws change how and when the general expiration dates apply. For example, works published without proper notice before 1989 may already be in the public domain because proper copyright procedures were not followed. Additionally, copyrights may be renewed for certain lengths of time, thereby extending the natural expiration date. Works in the Public Domain for 2019 In 2019, several first-time copyright events occurred in the United States. For instance, 2019 marks the first year since 1998 in which the majority of media from the previous year expired and entered the public domain. Also, under the Copyright Term Extension Act, in 2019- after a 95-year copyright term- 1923 works entered the public domain, with 1924 works becoming public domain in 2020, and so forth. U.S. media in the public domain also includes an unpublished work from authors who died in 1948. Examples of U.S. works that entered the public domain in 2019 include: Kiss Me, Kate, a musical by Cole Porter; The Prophet, by Kahlil Gibran; The White Rose, by D.W. Griffith; and the Ten Commandments, in black and white, by B. DeMille. International Copyright Laws There are no universal copyright laws that apply in all countries. Therefore, check current copyright laws in the country where you reside or are planning to establish right to your works to make sure you are in compliance. Automatic Copyright Protection Anything you create, or conceive, that is an original âform of expressionâ is automatically copyrighted under U.S. law. Generally, this automatic copyright protection is good for 50 to 70 years throughout the world. In the United States, current copyright laws protect individual authors for creations rendered on or after January 1, 1978, beginning the day the work was created. This automatic copyright lasts for 70 years after the authorâs death. Other Copyright Laws Still Affect the Duration of Authorâs Rights Legislation on copyright laws is always subject to change. For example, U.S. law required that copyrights be renewed every 28 years. Any copyrighted material that was published before 1964 that was subject to the 28-year renewal law, and has not been renewed, is now public domain material in the United States. Additionally, all books and other published works prior to, and including, 1923 are considered public domain in the United States. Exclusions to Limited Duration on Copyrights These laws only pertain to material published inside the United States, that was created by U.S. citizens, or someone residing legally in the country at the time of U.S. publication. Additionally, Fair Use laws also permit people to use works in limited ways without obtaining permission from the author. Copyrighted materials from other countries are still protected as long as the person is a non-U.S. citizen, and still holds their copyrights in their own country.

Most of the Air Force medals have counterparts in the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps. Here are some of the best-known medals awarded by the Air Force, listed in no particular order. Air Force Medal of Honor The highest honor for heroism, the Air Force Medal of Honor is a gold five-pointed star, one point down, inside a wreath of green laurel. Each point is tipped with trefoils and includes within the background a crown of laurel and oak. An annulet of 34 stars, representing the head of the Statue of Liberty, is centered on the star. The star is suspended from a bar and bears the inscription VALOR above a rendering of the USAF coat of arms thunderbolt. Air Force pilots may receive the Silver Star after five or more combat situation confirmed kills (also known as an ace), in situations where he or she has risked their life numerous times. Bronze Star Given for heroic or meritorious achievement or service in connection with military operations against an armed enemy, not involving aerial flight. Purple Heart All branches of the American military have a medal for servicemen and women wounded or killed in action. The Purple Heart has a profile of George Washington, who created the award, originally called the Badge of Military Merit. It was renamed the Purple Heart since the color purple symbolizes bravery and courage. Defense Superior Service Medal Recognizes service in a position of great responsibility in a joint activity. This medal is usually awarded to senior officers such as generals and colonels (which makes sense given its description). When you speak up in team meetings, your colleagues roll their eyes. You feel like you hear whispers every time you walk down the hallway.For whatever reason, youâre hated at work. And, even further, youâre convinced that itâs your no-good, backstabbing co-workers that are the problem. Why on earth wouldnât they like you? You think youâre pretty great. How catty and childish (ahem, not to mention blind) are they?Brace yourself for a rude awakening: The issue here could very well be you.When youâre not well-liked in the office, itâs easy to point the finger at your co-workers. But, hereâs the brutal reality: You play a large role in how youâre perceived in the office- meaning itâs not all the fault of your seemingly nasty and judgmental colleagues.âWe all have blind spots about ourselves,â explains Kathi Elste r, President of K Squared Enterprises, co-author of Mean Girls at Work, and co-host of My Crazy Office Podcast.âWhen the behaviors are âbuilt inâ, itâs easy for us to see them as right. Habits slowly build from this repeated behavior,â adds Jeanne Patti, a career coach. âIf we ourselves donât see the habits forming or those around us donât call us out on them, these behaviors can become chronic and can negatively affect our character and how others view us.âWhat does all of this mean for you? Well, the way that youâre behaving in the office could be majorly turning your colleagues off- without you even realizing it. Hereâs how to turn it around and become more likable - not with tricks, but with honest self-assessment.How to examine your own behavior for flaws So, what sorts of behaviors could you be exhibiting that are making your teammates cringe? Well, from constantly complaining to interrupting, your obnoxious actions could run the gamut. âThe most to xic behaviors I see in the workplace involve individuals who think that the only way for them to get a win is for other people to lose,â explains Karlyn Borysenko, a principal of Zen Workplace, about something she sees crop up frequently. âIf they arenât pushing other people down, they donât think they can get ahead.âOffice gossip is another terrible trap thatâs easy to fall into. âAs human beings, we like to understand why things are the way they are, and if we donât have a clear explanation for it, weâll come up with stories to explain it,â adds Borysenko. Here are some other things you could be doing that are contributing to your âleast likedâ status in the office.Maintaining control at all costs: Being the quintessential control freak might seem like a great way to take initiative and bring some much-needed organization to your team, but itâs sure to grate on your colleagues.âThese people want to make all the decisions, double-check everything, and n itpick all the small details,â says Borysenko. Exhibiting this behavior might mean that youâll even go so far as to provide direction to your peers- you act like the boss, even though youâre not. Taking credit for otherâs work: This oneâs a no-brainer, right? But, youâd be surprised by how easy it is to fall into this same trap yourself. Whether you provide a not-so-subtle reminder that the project was a team effort when your colleague is praised by your boss or you pass off an idea that your team member mentioned to you as your own, it can be tempting to ride on coattails or create your own spinoffs in order to shift the spotlight to yourself. Breeding negativity: When your team member wants to change the way you do a certain report, you complain. When the office manager switches out the brand of coffee in the breakroom, you complain.âThe pessimist can build a pretty strong case why the change can hurt the status quo,â says Patti. âWhen projects donât meet their goals, these guardians prove themselves ârightâ, and the pessimistic behavior will build upon itself.âHaving all the answers: Nobody likes a know-it-all. Not only is this behavior just plain obnoxious, but it can also lead to some pretty condescending treatment of your colleagues. âWhen this person becomes stressed or unable to contribute in a way they see as valuable to help fix the problem, they can quickly judge others and see them as incompetent,â Patti explains. Avoiding conflict: Are you somebody who prefers to duck and cover as soon as conflicts arise or conversations get a little more heated? You might think that playing Switzerland is a surefire way to stay out of the mess altogether. But, avoiding unpleasantness at all costs- and leaving your co-workers to duke it out, even when you have a dog in the fight yourself- is actually equally as frustrating. How to build self awarenessHereâs the problem we all run into: Recognizing these behaviors in ourselves can be tough. After all, if you knew that something you were doing was royally pissing your co-workers off, you probably wouldâve stopped doing that thing long ago, right? Needless to say, the first step to changing any behavior or habit is being able to identify it. So, in order to gain some more favor in the office (and stop those eye rolls that youâve grown to dread), youâre going to need to become a little more self-aware. Hereâs how.1. Take ownershipFirst up? Accepting the fact that you do indeed play a large role in the way that youâre perceived in the office. Sorry, itâs not all the fault of your seemingly judgmental colleagues.âIf we acknowledge how our behaviors are being perceived by our co-workers, that means we need to place blame on ourselves, and most people simply donât want to do that,â shares Borysenko. âItâs far easier to put ourselves in the role of a victim so that we donât have to accept that we probably could have approached things differentl y.â2. Ask for feedbackRemember those blind spots you have about your own behavior? You might need to pull in some outside reinforcements to help you realize when youâre acting like, well, a jerk. âWe all need to get direct feedback on what we are doing wrong,â explains Elster. Whether you want to have an honest (and likely to be brutally frank) conversation with a co-worker that you trust or plan to bring up the way that youâre perceived in the office during a one-on-one with your supervisor, getting the insights- and help- of other people on your team can help to open your eyes to the way youâre acting. 3. Pay attention to your stress reactionsâOn a good day, we can play nice with anyone,â shares Patti, âYet, when weâre frustrated and under stress, our core traits come flying out.ââMost of us act out when we are stressed, which will contribute to bringing out our worst behaviors,â adds Elster. âWe need to know what our stress reactions might be.âPay c lose attention to how your attitude and behavior change when youâre placed in a high pressure situation. For example, do you become extra pushy and controlling when youâre working with a tight deadline?Anticipating that reaction will help you to more proactively manage it.4. Stop judgingWhen you realize that youâve been acting like a straight-up jerk in the office, itâs human nature to start beating yourself up. But, resist the temptation to drag yourself over the coals.âStop judging things as good or bad- your behaviors or other peopleâs,â warns Borysenko. âThe minute we see something as âbadâ we try to fight against it, but thatâs usually just not productive. Anytime you find yourself judging, take a step back, breathe, consider your goals, and look for the best way to bring others along to achieve them.â5. Frequently step back and examine your own roleNo one sets out to behave in bad ways; we all try to work in ways that are comfortable for us. So, unless youâre a psychopath (they do well at work!) thereâs a good chance that the behaviors that you assume to be harmless could be the very things that are pushing your co-workers away.Be aware of these common toxic behaviors and implement these tips to become more aware of your own actions, and youâre much more likely to tackle the important task of turning your reputation around.Remember that you often get back the reactions you put out there: if youâre doing a lot of eye-rolling yourself, youâre more likely to get eye-rolls from others in return. If youâre complaining a lot, people are complaining about you.Above all: be authentic. Putting on an act to seem like a different person takes a lot of energy, wonât make you feel better and most of your colleagues are likely to see right through it anyway. Most of the time, unless weâre Oscar-nominated actors, weâre not fooling anyone by pretending. Be sincere in your words and actions, and treat people with the respect they deserve.âYou can be the smartest person in the room, but if no one likes you or no one wants to work with you, your reputation is going to be hurt,â concludes Elster. âBehavior matters.â

Thatâs the perception of many professionals whoâve been out of work for extended periods.Itâs also reality, according to recruiters and hiring managers who admit theyâre likelier to pass up job seekers with significant, unexplained gaps in their work histories.Those recruiters see the stigma attached to lengthy unemployment as less damaging during recessionary times, since the experience is more common. The average period of unemployment now stands at 211 days, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and higher earners average even longer without work. But long stretches without work will still count against you if you donât handle the situation correctly.Winning over hiring managers and HR pros requires you to account for your time out of the workforce, recruiters told Ladders.âI donât think that it is the gap in employment that will hurt people; I think itâs how they answer the question of what they were doing with their time,â said Kris Alban, director of strategic partnerships for iGrad, an organization that helps college graduates navigate career and financial challenges. âWere you using the time effectively, or were you catching up on old episodes of âLostâ?â asked Angela Lussier, author of âThe Anti-Resume Revolution.âIn addition, there are ways you certainly shouldnât account for your time: âIâve been looking for a jobâ is not sufficient, said Mandy Minor, a resume writer and marketing strategist at J Allan Studios in St. Petersburg, Fla. âThereâs really no excuse, other than mental-health issues such as depression, for someone to just sit at home.âItâs critical for job seekers to show prospective employers that a long period between full-time jobs has been filled with some sort of productive and relevant experience. Employers understan d that the employment situation is bleak, but they want to hire someone who has shown initiative during the time he or she has been between jobs.VolunteerThe most common suggestion from recruiters and hiring experts is to work part-time or as a consultant, or volunteer in a way that is relevant to your career. If you engage in an activity that fits your career path, thereâs no reason a consulting or volunteer position canât fill that time in your resume. (Read more about turning volunteer service into career opportunities.)âIf you volunteer in a situation where you can utilize your day-to-day business skills, then I think itâs a great idea and a great way to further your career because youâre essentially doing a job and are not just sitting around,â said Rahul D. Yodh, an executive recruiter with Link Legal Search Group in Dallas. âAt the same time, youâre building some contacts, and you never know where that will lead. If you can get a high-enough volunteering posit ion, then thatâs probably the best route to take.âThe same holds true for consulting and contract work, said Cheryl Palmer, president of Call to Career, an executive-coaching firm.âPerforming contract or temporary work makes it easy to explain what the job seeker has been doing on the resume and cover letter as well as in the interview,â she said. âThis type of work also has the added benefit of giving the job seeker some income. And another benefit is that it puts the job seeker in a better position to find out about openings. If a full-time position becomes available in the company where the job seeker is doing contract work, it is very likely that the job seeker will be offered the position, since he or she is already a known entity to the company.âThere is no prohibition against listing consulting and volunteer positions in line with full-time work on a chronological resume, hiring experts told Ladders. (There are also ways to use the resume format, such as using yea rs instead of months, to de-emphasize the time period.)Experience outside the boxIf you canât find a volunteer or contract position that correlates exactly with your area of expertise, do what you can to align the experience with the jobs you are seeking.For iGradâs Alban, itâs less about having a good reason for the way you spent your time. âI feel the best way to handle this question is to tell a good story that demonstrates how you used creativity in your job search. Even if it didnât work, we like that you demonstrated some out-of-the box thinking.âAuthor Lussier recommended creating your own opportunities when none exist. Besides volunteering, devoting yourself to a hobby, interest, training or education can be a palatable answer for how you spent your unemployment.Lussier also stressed the importance of âgetting in front of people,â whether by joining a professional organization or making a public appearance: say, volunteering to give a presentation on a subjec t you know well.
