The duration of a copyright is determined by when a work was created, whether it was published, and whether the author died. Also, an unpublished work that was created before 1978 is still protected under copyright laws for the life of the author plus an additional 70 years after the authors death. For example, works published without proper notice before 1989 may already be in the public domain because proper copyright procedures were not followed. Works in the Public Domain for 2019 In 2019, several first-time copyright events occurred in the United States. For instance, 2019 marks the first year since 1998 in which the majority of media from the previous year expired and entered the public domain. Also, under the Copyright Term Extension Act, in 2019- after a 95-year copyright term- 1923 works entered the public domain, with 1924 works becoming public domain in 2020, and so forth. U.S. media in the public domain also includes an unpublished work from authors who died in 1948. Griffith; and the Ten Commandments, in black and white, by B. DeMille. International Copyright Laws There are no universal copyright laws that apply in all countries. Therefore, check current copyright laws in the country where you reside or are planning to establish right to your works to make sure you are in compliance. Automatic Copyright Protection Anything you create, or conceive, that is an original “form of expression” is automatically copyrighted under U.S. law. Generally, this automatic copyright protection is good for 50 to 70 years throughout the world. In the United States, current copyright laws protect individual authors for creations rendered on or after January 1, 1978, beginning the day the work was created. This automatic copyright lasts for 70 years after the author’s death. Other Copyright Laws Still Affect the Duration of Author’s Rights Legislation on copyright laws is always subject to change. For example, U.S. law required that copyrights be renewed every 28 years. Any copyrighted material that was published before 1964 that was subject to the 28-year renewal law, and has not been renewed, is now public domain material in the United States. Additionally, all books and other published works prior to, and including, 1923 are considered public domain in the United States. Exclusions to Limited Duration on Copyrights These laws only pertain to material published inside the United States, that was created by U.S. citizens, or someone residing legally in the country at the time of U.S. publication. But, here’s the brutal reality: You play a large role in how you’re perceived in the office- meaning it’s not all the fault of your seemingly nasty and judgmental colleagues.“We all have blind spots about ourselves,” explains Kathi Elste r, President of K Squared Enterprises, co-author of Mean Girls at Work, and co-host of My Crazy Office Podcast.“When the behaviors are ‘built in’, it’s easy for us to see them as right. Habits slowly build from this repeated behavior,” adds Jeanne Patti, a  career coach.  â€œIf we ourselves don’t see the habits forming or those around us don’t call us out on them, these behaviors can become chronic and can negatively affect our character and how others view us.”What does all of this mean for you? Well, the way that you’re behaving in the office could be majorly turning your colleagues off- without you even realizing it. Here’s how to turn it around and become more likable - not with tricks, but with honest self-assessment.How to examine your own behavior for flaws  So, what sorts of behaviors could you be exhibiting that are making your teammates cringe? Well, from constantly complaining to interrupting, your obnoxious actions could run the gamut. “The most to xic behaviors I see in the workplace involve individuals who think that the only way for them to get a win is for other people to lose,” explains Karlyn Borysenko, a principal of  Zen Workplace, about something she sees crop up frequently. “If they aren’t pushing other people down, they don’t think they can get ahead.”Office gossip is another terrible trap that’s easy to fall into. “As human beings, we like to understand why things are the way they are, and if we don’t have a clear explanation for it, we’ll come up with stories to explain it,” adds Borysenko. Here are some other things you could be doing that are contributing to your “least liked” status in the office.Maintaining control at all costs: Being the quintessential control freak might seem like a great way to take initiative and bring some much-needed organization to your team, but it’s sure to grate on your colleagues.“These people want to make all the decisions, double-check everything, and n itpick all the small details,” says Borysenko. Exhibiting this behavior might mean that you’ll even go so far as to provide direction to your peers- you act like the boss, even though you’re not. Taking credit for other’s work: This one’s a no-brainer, right? But, you’d be surprised by how easy it is to fall into this same trap yourself. Breeding negativity: When your team member wants to change the way you do a certain report, you complain. When the office manager switches out the brand of coffee in the breakroom, you complain.“The pessimist can build a pretty strong case why the change can hurt the status quo,” says Patti. “When projects don’t meet their goals, these guardians prove themselves ‘right’, and the pessimistic behavior will build upon itself.”Having all the answers: Nobody likes a know-it-all. Not only is this behavior just plain obnoxious, but it can also lead to some pretty condescending treatment of your colleagues. “When this person becomes stressed or unable to contribute in a way they see as valuable to help fix the problem, they can quickly judge others and see them as incompetent,” Patti explains. Avoiding conflict: Are you somebody who prefers to duck and cover as soon as conflicts arise or conversations get a little more heated? You might think that playing Switzerland is a surefire way to stay out of the mess altogether. But, avoiding unpleasantness at all costs- and leaving your co-workers to duke it out, even when you have a dog in the fight yourself- is actually equally as frustrating. How to build self awarenessHere’s the problem we all run into: Recognizing these behaviors in ourselves can be tough. After all, if you knew that something you were doing was royally pissing your co-workers off, you probably would’ve stopped doing that thing long ago, right?  Needless to say, the first step to changing any behavior or habit is being able to identify it. So, in order to gain some more favor in the office (and stop those eye rolls that you’ve grown to dread), you’re going to need to become a little more self-aware. Here’s how.1. Take ownershipFirst up? Accepting the fact that you do indeed play a large role in the way that you’re perceived in the office. Sorry, it’s not all the fault of your seemingly judgmental colleagues.“If we acknowledge how our behaviors are being perceived by our co-workers, that means we need to place blame on ourselves, and most people simply don’t want to do that,” shares Borysenko. “It’s far easier to put ourselves in the role of a victim so that we don’t have to accept that we probably could have approached things differentl y.”2. Ask for feedbackRemember those blind spots you have about your own behavior? You might need to pull in some outside reinforcements to help you realize when you’re acting like, well, a jerk. “We all need to get direct feedback on what we are doing wrong,” explains Elster. Whether you want to have an honest (and likely to be brutally frank) conversation with a co-worker that you trust or plan to bring up the way that you’re perceived in the office during a one-on-one with your supervisor, getting the insights- and help- of other people on your team can help to open your eyes to the way you’re acting.  3. Pay attention to your stress reactions“On a good day, we can play nice with anyone,” shares Patti, “Yet, when we’re frustrated and under stress, our core traits come flying out.”“Most of us act out when we are stressed, which will contribute to bringing out our worst behaviors,” adds Elster. “We need to know what our stress reactions might be.”Pay c lose attention to how your attitude and behavior change when you’re placed in a high pressure situation. For example, do you become extra pushy and controlling when you’re working with a tight deadline?Anticipating that reaction will help you to more proactively manage it.4. Stop judgingWhen you realize that you’ve been acting like a straight-up jerk in the office, it’s human nature to start beating yourself up. But, resist the temptation to drag yourself over the coals.“Stop judging things as good or bad- your behaviors or other people’s,” warns Borysenko. “The minute we see something as ‘bad’ we try to fight against it, but that’s usually just not productive. Anytime you find yourself judging, take a step back, breathe, consider your goals, and look for the best way to bring others along to achieve them.”5. Frequently step back and examine your own roleNo one sets out to behave in bad ways; we all try to work in ways that are comfortable for us. Is the command “do your job” about the employee playing on her phone, or is it a response to the employees complaint about a safety violation? Its critical that you dont become too hardened to employee complaints, because your most important job is to help the business. If you ignore a complaint that a manager is yelling and it turns out that the manager truly is yelling, turnover may increase or customers might overhear and thats damaging to the business. Be careful about telling people that they always have to go through the chain of command before complaining. For example, a  sexually harassed female may not feel comfortable going to her male supervisors boss to complain about the harassment. In this case, the policy of always following the chain may result in continued harassment and legal liability for the company. How to Field Employee Complaints There are many approaches to handling employee complaints, but six general strategies form the basis for investigating possibly subjective complaints. Get to know your management/supervisory team. You need to know that Jane is prone to yell, Steve is the nicest guy ever but allows his staff to walk all over him, and Karen doesnt have a clue what goes on with her staff. You cant get this information just by talking one-on-one with the management staff. You need to pop in and out. This isnt because youre managing these people- youre not. Its because you need to know whats actually happening. Find out whats really going on. When an employee says, “My manager is always watching me,” figure out what that means. Ask, “What do you mean when you say that your manager is always watching you?” and “Why is this a problem for you?” You may find out that the employee is just whining. Then again, you may find out that the supervisor is hovering inappropriately over a particular employee or that the employee hasnt been properly trained. You wont know until you ask. Ask, “What do you want me to do about that?” Sometimes people just want to vent. They want to say, “Im frustrated. Im in a dead-end job, my supervisor is annoying, and Im tired of working 10-hour days for low pay.” But sometimes they really want help with a problem. Its important to differentiate between the two situations- but critical if you want to effectively respond to employee complaints. Keep your door open. Its a great policy to encourage employees to solve most of their problems themselves. An HR manager is not a therapist or a parent. But if you turn people away, youll miss valuable or even critical information. An open-door policy is always recommended. Be careful about notifying the supervisor or manager. Sometimes this is fine. But always let the employee know that you will inform his supervisor. If you dont, he will feel betrayed. Just because HR managers arent therapists doesnt mean that employees dont expect  total confidentiality  from them. Many do and are shocked when they find out otherwise. Dont let this happen. Sometimes the employee may say, “No! Dont tell my supervisor.” In this case, youll have to decide whether its necessary. For instance, if the employee complaint is, “My supervisor always tells me how to do my job!” you can ask, “Are you always doing what youre supposed to be doing?” If the answer is, “No, but neither is Eric,” you can simply advise her to try doing her job all the time and ignoring her coworkers. No discussion with management is needed. On the other hand, if the complaint is about racial discrimination, you must clearly communicate that you have to investigate and that certain people will have to know. If youre able to handle everything by talking to the employee, theres not always a reason to tell his manager and possibly damage the employee-manager relationship. Remember, minor incidents are often huge for employees. When youre dealing with a lot of entry-level people, you have to understand that issues you take for granted, they cant. For example, an exempt, professional-level employee taking an extra 15 minutes at lunch is probably not a big deal. But a brand-new waitress in the middle of her three-month probationary period could find herself unemployed for doing the same thing. You know your boss isnt likely to fire you for a minor infraction, yet someone whos new to the workforce cant always make an accurate assessment of just how serious a situation is. The job of HR is more of an art than a science. You cant always do the perfect thing every time because youre dealing with imperfect employees. Bottom line, they found that resumes with names like Jay, Brad, Carrie, and Kristen were 50 percent more likely to receive a callback than those with names like Keisha, Latoya, Rasheed, and Darnell. OK, that's one shocking statistic, which at first glance might seem to imply that recruiters, HR people, and hiring managers must be a bunch of filthy racists. (Tabloid journalism, anyone?) Come on. A tiny percentage may be, but overall, hiring professionals were anxious to learn how to remove these biases from the screening process once they learned of them, according to the researchers. Suffice it to say, every human being has biases. We can reject the ones we're aware of in ourselves, but it's tough to act on the ones that are subconscious. But sometimes name discrimination isn't about race or ethnicity or xenophobia at all. It's just laziness or fear of embarrassment.
